It’s Your Move: How to Position for Success

Success for everyone is different. How you define success is based on your personal dreams, goals, and aspirations. But here’s the thing. However you define success, you will never reach it if you don’t position for it.

Most people are not seeing the success they want in life because they are waiting for something magical to happen. Wishing, hoping and talking but not DOING. If you want success whether in life or in business, you have to position yourself in the area in which you want things to happen and then start DOING. That’s when the magic happens. Just being in position causes things to happen and opportunities to present themselves.

Here’s how you begin positioning for success:

  1. Determine the goal/destination – Be clear about what it is that you want to accomplish. You cannot reach a destination that hasn’t been defined. If you’re focused on a big or major goal, then first break it down and figure out what steps it will take to reach that goal. Each step then becomes a small goal toward that big goal. Now focus on one small goal at a time.
  2. Make a move – Movement brings clarity to your goal and is also gets you closer to the results you want. When you begin to move in the direction you want to go, doors will open. Movement means that you believe in your goals and dreams. Movement means that you’ve made a decision. What is your first move? Do that!
  3. Maintain momentum – Once you get going DO NOT STOP. It takes way more energy to get going than it does to keep going. Whatever you do, find a way to stay motivated. Life happens, things happen but these are not excuses to stop or even to press pause. Make your positioning non-negotiable. Don’t expend all of your energy starting and then stopping. You’ll end up¬†spinning your wheels and stuck in the same place. Find a positioning partner who will help you and let you know when you’re getting out of position and can nudge back in place.

When you understand the importance of being in position, you’ll stop waiting and start doing. Know that positioning is not the same as waiting. Waiting can be passive but positioning is always active.

Be fully dressed and positioned. When opportunity knocks will you be dressed and presentable or will you have your pajamas on? Get in position and be ready for opportunity when it comes.

  1. Cheryl, thank you for the insightful post. The analogy of being prepared for opportunity by being fully dressed was right on.
